The “Green Start”: Successful Completion of the All-Russian Carbon Test-Sites Crash Course

Published 15.05.2025

The All—Russian educational crash course "Green Start" was held, dedicated to innovative technologies for combating climate change, in particular carbon test-sites. The event, organized in online format, brought together students, young scientists and enthusiasts of environmental initiatives. The participants immersed themselves in topical issues of climate regulation.

Anastasia Koval, a Vernadsky Foundation scholarship holder, a research engineer of the Laboratory of Ecosystem and Atmospheric Ties, a graduate student of the Higher Ecological School of the Yugra State University, made a report. As part of the environmental education, the participants were presented with the cognitive module “Cycles of Substances in Nature: Why Are Greenhouse Gases Changing the Climate?”, revealing the relationship of greenhouse gases with global climate change. The section included an interactive master class, where through visual modeling of natural processes it is possible to trace the mechanisms of the influence of human activity on the ecological balance.

Special attention was paid to the practical block “Climate Rescuers: What Are Carbon Test-Sites and Why Are They Needed?”, which introduced the audience to the full cycle of creation and operation of carbon test-sites — from concept to implementation. Anastasia also provided detailed information on modern methods of carbon balance research:

  1. The chambermethod, which allows for anaccurateassessment of the soilcarbonbalancethrough the control of gas exchange inclosedecosystems;
  2. Aeromonitoring (remote sending) usingunmannedaerialvehiclesequipped with high-precision gas analyzers,whichmakes it possible to conduct large-scalestudies of the distribution of carboncompoundsinvariousecosystems;
  3. An innovativemethodproviding a comprehensiveanalysis of the dynamics of airmassesand the transport of gasmixturesoverplantcommunities.

Each method is accompanied by an explanation of its scientific basis, a demonstration of equipment and an analysis of practical application cases in modern environmental research. The “Green Start” was a step in popularizing climate technologies and bringing together young scientists for a sustainable future.
