The V.I. Vernadsky Foundation took part in a scientific event in BEN dedicated to Academician V.I. Vernadsky.
Documents and books, personal belongings and rare photographs; a death mask and a cast of V.I. Vernadsky's right hand; samples of minerals and rocks collected by Vernadsky during his expeditions; as well as paintings by plein-air artists, painted in the cabinet-museum at GEOHI RAS, within the framework of the project "Places Associated with V.I. Vernadsky" - with all these unique exhibits, those invited to the exhibition were able to get acquainted, each of which is somehow connected to the activities of the great scientist. In a warm atmosphere, guests of the exhibition shared their scientific findings and emotions, as well as impressions of the great scientist's discoveries. They also recalled how multifaceted Vernadsky’s life was – he lived a unique life. The speakers emphasized that the scale and scientific genius of Vernadsky were on the edge of comprehending nowadays.
The exhibition project with the purpose of celebrating the 300th anniversary of the RAS was developed and implement by the BEN RAS in collaboration with the Vernadsky Institute of Geochemistry and Analytical Chemistry of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Ore and Petrographic Museum IGEM RAS, The Group of the History of Geology GIN RAS, "the Association of Plein-air Artists». Representatives of these scientific institutions, as well as supporters and partners of the Library gathered to remember the great man.
«Despite of his extensive knowledge and vast expertise in various scientific fields, Vernadsky has not fully entered our scientific world yet – the time of Vernadsky is yet to come. Future generations will still have to master and comprehend his discoveries, and these developments will be incredibly interesting, » said Gennady Aksenov, Vernadsky's biographer, a leading researcher at the S.I. Vavilov Institute of the RAS.
It was noted that Vernadsky’s most revolutionary idea was the idea of eternalness and the cosmic significance of living matter. In his scientific articles, the scientist did not only declare, but proved, on an empirical and theoretical level, the synchronicity between the geological history of the planet and its biosphere. However, much attention has been paid to Vernadsky’s humanism. He was not only a scientist, but also a great person – a model of integrity and fullness of higher spiritual interests.
Books, brochures, and albums with scientific articles written by Vernadsky were transferred to the BEN RAS fund by the authors and publishers at the exhibition opening. As it turns out, much of the scientist's life has remained unpublished, and this effort needs to be continued.
The Vernadsky Foundation has been actively working in this direction. Andrey Cheshev, the Deputy General Director of the Foundation, spoke about projects and programs in the field of popularization of Vernadsky's scientific ideas, which the Foundation conducts not only in Russia, but also abroad.
In addition to publishing, the Foundation is engaged in diverse educational activities among the younger generation. Vernadsky's activities run as a red line through all the "green" environmental projects of the Foundation. It is the Foundation that lays the first grain of knowledge about Vernadsky for schoolchildren. And those who are carried away and interested in the scientific ideas of the scientist, the Foundation's staff leads under their wing to the most serious scientific horizons. One of such educational and enlightening projects is the Foundation Day, which will be held very soon, on March 29, at the site of the “Pristine Russia” photoproject.
Within the framework of the exhibition dedicated to the 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences, it is planned to hold thematic enlightening events dedicated to the life and work of the great scientist, including with the Vernadsky Foundation.
The exhibition will be from March 27 to May 31, 2024 at: BEN RAS, Moscow, Znamenka str. 11/11. Opening hours: Monday - Thursday from 10:00 to 18:00, Friday from 10:00 to 17:00. Admission is free for readers of the BEN RAS and staff of the RAS institutes.
